Acupuncture for Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is something just about everyone has dealt with at some point. It may be caused by strenuous activity, simply sitting in an uncomfortable position for too long, or a more serious accident or injury. Regardless of the cause, lower back pain can leave sufferers with stiffness, pain, and inhibited mobility. Luckily, there are ways to treat this pain that don’t involve damaging your body the way painkillers and over-the-counter drugs do.

Acupuncture and Pain Relief

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating headaches and migraines, neck pain, and even sciatica, so it should come as no surprise that it offers significant relief from lower back pain.

To reduce pain, acupuncturists target specific areas, known as acupuncture points, that offer relief from pain and other symptoms when stimulated. Acupuncture typically involves the insertion of incredibly thin needles at these acupuncture points, but it may also involve laser stimulation or heat.

Acupuncture as a Treatment for Lower Back Pain

Though gaining more and more acceptance in Western medicine and society, there is still skepticism as to whether acupuncture really provides relief for lower back pain and other ailments. However, there are a multitude of studies that show acupuncture offers real relief for lower back pain.

These studies compare the effectiveness of acupuncture both with no treatment and with sham therapy. In place of no therapy, acupuncture offers significant relief from lower back pain and increased mobility. With acupuncture versus sham therapy, those that received acupuncture reported far lower levels of pain.
